For some reason, I can see the nasty deed Snape does in this vein performing
Crucio on Dumbledore.  If he truly is working for D and yet trying to appear
he is loyal to V, he will do what he can to avoid killing D, since he
honestly doesn't want him dead.  However, he might need to do something
nasty to prove his "loyalty."  Crucio'ing D would not only go a long way to
convincing the DEs he's on their side, but would probably infuriate many
people.  "How COULD he DO that to D?" is what many people would be saying.
You might not think it now, but honestly, how many people on here would have
had nasty things to say about James Potter before reading OotP?  All of a
sudden a bunch of people are villifying James and sympathizing with Severus.
JK is telling people not to like Snape too much.  I can see her doing
something along these lines.  Another possibility to add to this is that the
person he crucio's is Harry himself.  Perhaps even turning his victim over
to V.  Yes, I can see many people not thinking fondly of Snape then.  Just
my thoughts here.
