A weird theory coming up, but as it's the first I've posted about 
OotP I'll let myself off, just this once.  I wondered if the mirror 
didn't work because Sirius is 'beyond the veil' ie DEAD (by the way 
I'm still trying to convince myself that this is true, maybe that's 
why I've chosen to make this topic my first post about bk 5).  

Here's the theory:

Could it be that now the mirror is smashed (effectively 'dead'), 
Harry will once again be able to communicate with the much missed 
Godfather???
