Except for the occasional "you have your mother's eyes" Harry doesn't hear
much about his mother. On the other hand he's had James shoved right in
front of him since book 1. He's surrounded by James' friends, the man who
hates James, and Rosmerta and the teachers who remember James. He's told he
looks like James, acts like James, sounds like James, and he has a James
type Potronus. The Man responsible for betraying his parents was JAMES'
friend. James, James, James.

I think Lily will come into play in book six (Please, JKR if you're
listening, more Lily). Up until now though who have we met that would've
been closer to her instead of James? Petunia. And Petunia isn't exactly
forth coming with information. Plus the metathinking answer is its important
to the plot to keep us and Harry in the dark about her.

So -my- answer is: James is in the foreground so often that Lily gets pushed
aside. Harry hasn't had the same amount of stimulus to think about Lily as
he has James.

But there is a lot of opening of doors for more Lily thoughts to come
through for book six. Harry wonders why Lily married James after seeing them
in the Pensieve. Lily's blood is back again through protection at the
Dursley's. Perhaps now that Harry will be able to speak more openly to Mrs.
Figg we'll find out that her and Lily were friends, or that she has some of
LILY'S magical items for Harry.

Um there was HUGE discussion about this a while ago, but Yahoo isn't
cooperating at the moment. I _think_ the general consensus was that there
wasn't necessarily a godmother. Even if there was a godmother though, she
wouldn't have had Lily's blood line and Harry wouldn't have been raised away
from the wizarding world and his fame.

Then again, maybe Mrs. Figg is Harry's godmother?

Hope that helps
