When I read your post I thought the same thing, and the only place I 
could remember where it was mentioned was in the pensieve scene in 
GOF, so I went back and checked.  Dumbledore says, when Karkaroff 
names Snape as a DE, Snape "rejoined our side before Lord Voldemort's 
downfall and turned spy for us, at great personal risk."  

Dumbledore never said how soon before Snape rejoined; it could be a 
year or just before V went after the Potters.  However, if he turned 
spy after alerting V to the prophecy, it doesn't leave him much time 
for spying, as V seems to have gone after them rather quickly once he 
had the information.  I still seem to remember Dumbledore 
saying "more than a year" at some point in the series, but can't find 
it.
