In lieu of spoiler space, I am going to thank Grey Wolf and the Admin
team for the FAQ and hope that people will use it. I have read 1485
posts today to catch up and found some of it to be repetitious.

That said, on to business:

Hufflepuff: Pip!Squeak and Jenny from Ravenclaw (both of whom I
count amongst my favourite listees to read) were pleased that
Hufflepuff would "take the lot".

I was miffed as can be! For the last four years we, um, I mean they,
have had the proud honour of being fair and just and hard working and
all those things the sorting hat (in song) and Dumbledore (in Ced's
eulogy)said were associated with the House of Hufflepuff. Now we,
um, I mean they, are no more than the leftovers.

I had always liked the sorting of old as it meant that everyone had
at least one good quailty in them. Sure, some had the qualities of
more than one house, but at least everyone had something of which
they could be proud. Even in a Slytherin-pride kind of way.

I don't agree. The SH song may have said, "Good Hufflepuff, she took the rest" but I never read that as she got the leftovers. Earlier in the song the hat says, "Said Hufflepuff, 'I'll teach the lot,/And treat them just the same." So Hufflepuff was willing to teach anyone magic. That does not mean that they're just discards of the other houses. The way the song is phrased, with the other three houses having their say first in what students they get, it's easy to get that impression. Besides, I too admire the idea that Hufflepuff was willing to teach anyone. But I like to stick with the old SH songs and the other descriptions of Hufflepuffs throughout the books as Quigonginger listed above (fair, just, hardworking). And Cedric certainly didn't come across as a leftover of any of the other houses.

This did not come out as coherently as I'd hoped.

KathyK (who has a sneaking suspicion she's a Hufflepuff through and through and is perfectly happy with it)
