Well that's a relief!

I was not thinking so much about specific instances, but rather the 
ease with which characters hold, to their grave detriment, lifelong 
grudges or are unwilling to own up to their mistakes, great or 
small. I think one of the great lessons HP will have to learn, 
besides channeling his temper, is learning to use "love" (in the 
sense of an abstract force) not just in the instances of those about 
whom he cares, but also in cases where it's not entirely deserved.

It's not a matter of understanding why Character X would react 
negatively or bitterly to a given slight...I don't think there is 
much argument these reactions are natural and to be expected...but 
rather that these characters must learn that the bitterness is 
detrimental to their goals.

In that regard, very few characters are REALLY looking at 
consequences when they say/do things, and as a consequence act as a 
function of impulse. To their regret.
