Well, it certainly is when he is thinking about he *he* can't be 
helping.  (Beginning of OOP at Dursley's house)  Something 
like "didn't *I* do this; didn't *I* do that--no mention of "Gee, I 
hope Hermione and Ron aren't in danger"

Perhaps he would be a bit more of a praise seeker if he weren't 
already getting all that praise.

True. But part of growing up is recognizing that your own 
accomplishments are usually the result of efforts by yourself *and* 
others (whether voluntary or not)
