Response: Knowledge is power. Voldemort knows only that he tried to kill an infant and it didn't work. He tried to kill him again and the boy got away. What if the prophecy had said: "The boy will be killed only if he is attached on the 12th of June" or something like that. If V thinks there is something in the prophecy that he needs to know- yes, he'll try to get it.
Whay are they guarding it? Because V wants it and will either go himself or send others. If V. gets through, he will hear the prophecy- perhaps (I'm not sure) if others get through, they can take it to V.
Perhaps there was no one guarding the MOM because the Deatheaters had already taken care of that problem...
