Getting a little OT, but worth mentioning: serious, chronic depression -
clinical depression or manic depression - *are* serious illnesses, and are
usually physiologically based and respond to treatment.
It is not unusual for everyone to experience minor, short-lived depressions
throughout their lives in response to a *thing* that happens that depresses
them - that's a normal human emotion. People who are "always happy" either
are putting on a good show to the outside world, or could have a minor
problem with denial of reality and/or inability to respond appropriately in
emotional terms to external stimuli that would cause a (generally
short-lived) negative feeling in most people - be it anger, sadness,
frustration, etc.
The differences are duration, intensity and whether the depression is
free-floating and based on nothing in particular, or whether it is in direct
response to a negative experience.
