I haven't been able to figure out where or how to post a thought
I've been harboring ever since my first read through and a reply to
this post is as good as any.

Wouldn't Dumbledore dying in OOP been so much better than Sirius?
The Dumbledore Papers thoroughly outlined some gaping chinks in
Dumbledore's armour. And there is nothing like death, especially a
sacrificial one, to cover up someone's faults. By the end of OOP,
Dumbledore's shine has unquestionably dulled. It would have made
sense that the Order of the Phoenix work together to help Harry
after losing Dumbledore. His death could also have hastened the
Ministry's acceptance of Voldemort's return. Sirius had faults and
we loved him because of them. Dumbledore's faults are disturbing.
