Maybe. Or maybe you learn to think for yourself, do what's right,
and stand up to your friends when you need to. It all depends on
how much moral backbone and decency you have to begin with.
If Pettigrew observed James and Sirius' behavior and concluded from
it that it's okay to join forces with a genocidal psycho, betray
your friends to be murdered, and condemn an innocent man to years of
brutal imprisonment, then the problem lies with Pettigrew himself.
Nobody "drove" him to the Dark side. He was old enough to draw his
own conclusions and make his own choices.
