Degrees of Being in the Harry Potter series:

1. Alive: The usual way: Harry, Ron, Hermoine, et al

2. Alive via possession: Voldemort

3. Dead: (Not just merely dead, but most sincerely dead.) Tom
Riddle's father and grandparents

4. Poltergeists: Not living, not dead, can interact with the living:
Peeves.

5. Ghosts: Dead, but with the ability to interact with the living:
Nearly Headless Nick, Fat Friar, etc.

6. Echos: Dead, with the ability to interact with the living, but
only temporarily: The graveyard folk -- Cedric Diggory, Bertha
Jorkins, Frank Bryce, Harry's parents, etc.

7. Memory, interactive: Tom Riddle in the Chamber.

8. Memory, non-interactive: Pensieve scenes.

9. Photographs: Non-interactive but mobile, they can wave, move out
of frame, and experience physical changes in response to their
environment, but they do not talk to the living -- Photographs of:
Gilderoy's hair in curlers, Penelope Clearwater's blotchy nose,
Harry's parents waving to him.

10. Paintings: Interactive and mobile.

11. Other Artworks: Interactive (suits of armor) or interactive
when charmed (sculptures).

12. Body, no soul: Barty Crouch, Jr. after the kiss. (Lost the
concept of interaction completely.)

13. Spirit, no body: Voldemort after the infant Harry encounter.
(Would "interact" with anything breathing if it stood still long
enough.)

14. Archway of Death/ Beyond the Veil: Voices only, indiscernible.

So, will there be a difference in non-being for those who pass
through the veil whole (body and soul) as opposed to those who simply
have their souls pass? Is there a difference in passing through the
veil while you are still alive instead of after you are sincerely
dead?

Since JKR has presented and explored all these Degrees of Being, it
just seems to me that we aren't quite finished with the Degrees of
Being/ Non-Being.

In other words, ma-a-a-aybe Sirius will make a reappearance even
though he is sincerely dead.

(On the Good Ship, De-Ni-al. . .lalalalala.)
