Not only that, but JKR said in an interview (I can't remember which one
though), that Crookshanks is part Kneazle, which is a cat-like creature in
her book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them that is especially
intelligent. So I doubt he's an Animagus.

Seeing as how he's part Kneazle, what about Crookshanks would him being an
Animagus help to explain? Being part Kneazle would explain his intelligence.

IIRC, he actually throws himself at Ron, trying to attack Scabbers and not
Hermione in the shop in PoA.

I was wondering about that. Of course we have wizards who can talk to
snakes (Parselmouths), but we don't hear about any other way that wizards
can communicate with animals. Yet it seems to happen fairly often, even
with Squibs. Filch and Figg both seem to have strong connections with their
cats that can't be easily explained. Then again, a lot of people in real
life feel their pets know what they're thinking and feeling, perhaps it's
just an extreme version of that? Perhaps that would work for moods and
such, but the kind of communication Sirius did with Crookshanks in PoA
always had me wondering.
