Absolutely spot on about the movie hero, or more correctly, anti-hero - I'm
never quite as enamored of the bad boys and rebels without a clue, and so I
don't cheer in movie theatres for them.

But I think James just reformed - and that's another question, which I asked
earlier, but I'll ask it again: How long and how hard should someone's
mistakes be held against them? James is dead, and now Sirius, and he spent
wasted years in Azkaban. Not because of what they did to Snape, but note
that Snape's still alive and doing better than living out of garbage cans at
Hogwarts. Snape can never undo what was done to him - but perhaps he can
forgive them for being thoughtless boys, and reconcile himself with the
present - the present being Harry, who's still alive and who has done
nothing to him, save dislike him for being a prick in Potions which *he*
started (not harry acting out in class or anything).
