But Hagrid's encounter with the giants suggests that they deserve
their bad reputation in the wizarding world. Violent, not too bright,
and treacherous to each other. The idea of people who really do
deserve their bad reputation is interesting in a parable against
prejudice ... Is the Grawp subplot going to show that if you catch
'em young and take them away from their families and native culture
and raise them in your culture, then they'll turn out okay?
I agree that it seems strange that the prejudices against Giants seem to be based on truth, but then how can you really say what is normal or not. In the Giants' society their behaviour is obviously normal - same as it was during the stone ages with humans, I suspect - and the WW goes and measures the Giants' society on their own and the Giants obviously come away short.
But we also hear that the Giants already have their own problems that because of the constant fighting and backstabbing they are nearly extinct. IMO that only shows what is the worst that could happen if Voldemort wins. (I know that's a long shot.)
On your second comment: I really have a big problem with taking away the children to raise them to your standards, even though because of their physiology they will never fit into society and that only because you think that it's better for them. (Remind anyone of the Stolen Generation?) Sure, that way Giants may survive but you also take away their free choice and I don't think they will necessarily be happier, living under those conditions.
After all Hagrid had to force Gwarp to come with him and when Hagrid wasn't there he was confused, lonely and I bet angry as hell. Hagrid ment well, but I don't think his way is the solution to the problem.
