Wizarding Relations, or, Who Left the Snapes Out?

When Harry and Sirius are looking over the Black family tree, he (Sirius) 
states that almost all the pureblood wizarding families are intermarried, as 
there is no one else for them to marry.  I didn't notice the grand old name of 
Snape there, and I'm sure Harry would have mentioned it had he seen it.
  Whether these means anything or nothing, I know not.  I'm just wondering if 
Snape's father is/was a Muggle (hence the shouting scene and the seemingly 
unhappy home--and the reason young Severus is practicing magic in his room).  
Interesting if the Head of Slytherin House isn't a pureblood!
