I still think that McGonagall guessed about the Remembrall, but if
she allowed Ron to confirm it, Slytherins would deny it. Despite of
having broken the rules, Harry still did the right thing in standing
up for Neville.
It wasn't favoritism - just giving a conditional penalty to first-
timer, who just happened to also show talent.
And McGonagall won't give a mind to noble reasons, as she tells
Malfoy within Harry's hearing: "As noble as your motives may be, you
still..." - at least, noble reason is no excuse to avoid detention in
her book. And well - she gave her a regular extra duty of hard flying
practise. Harry just happens to like it...
