The first thing that occurred to me after seeing the US cover is
that Harry actually IS a ghost. JK has been quoted as saying that
in book five Harry's going to have to examine what death means "in
even closer ways." I was assuming this meant a person close to him
dies (which apparantly IS going to happen.) But now I'm thinking it
alludes to Harry experiencing some aspect of the afterlife first
hand. That the "magical world" he visits is in fact some kind of
ghostly realm. Perhaps this is how we learn about some of the other
ghosts in the castle, and how they became ghosts in the first place.
Also, the passage in GoF, US edition page 372 may be a foreshadowing
of this occurrence: In reference to Trelawney's prediction of
Harry's desmise yet again; "But if I'd dropped dead every time she's
told me I'm going to, I'd be a medical miracle.' 'You'd be a sort
of extra-concentrated ghost,' said Ron, chortling, as they passed
the Bloody Baron going in the opposite direction, his wide eyes
staring sinisterly." That passage has always jumped out at me for
some reason. I feel sure we're going to at least learn of the
Baron's history in book five.
