Very interesting idea!! And , no, I don't think you are off! Dumbledore has mysterious ways, and that could be one of them. Also that explains the complete mental breakdown she's having. She is so terrified that Dumbledore, the kind wizard who took her in, will find out that she betrayed him! Not to mention the guilt that would accompany this. Good observation!
