I thought there was a connection between eagle owls and those who 
serve he-who-shall-not-be-named as well.  Another passage has Harry 
dreaming he is riding the back of an eagle owl that takes him to the 
Riddle House.  I believe there is also a part where Hermonie gives 
Harry an eagle owl quill as a gift.  I have always wondered if there 
was some significance.
