Ah ha.  You've caught on to part of the irony.  He clearly isn't a 
pureblood, but not really a mudblood.  I believe he falls into the 
half-blood category.  As do technically most of the WW (via Hagrids 
explanation).

But yes,  You are correct that he's not a pureblood.  So it is funny 
that he hates those like him and those of muggle blood.
