That question has occurred to me as well, but I'm not so sure the 
rest of the school found out where the Gryffindor common room was as 
a result of this incident.  When the students are sent to the Great 
Hall to sleep in their squashy purple sleeping bags, PoA reads: "The 
Hall immediately began to buzz excitedly; the Gryffindors were 
telling the rest of the school what had just happened" (Ch. 9).  I 
think the rest of the school could be told what happened without 
giving away the location of the common room.  For example, one 
student could tell another: "The portrait guarding our common room 
entrance was slashed when the occupant of the portrait wouldn't let 
Black in without the password."  Since there are lots of portraits 
around Hogwarts, the other student would still be in the dark as to 
which one it was.  

And even if the particular portrait was revealed, the students in the 
other houses wouldn't have the password, so they still wouldn't be 
able to get in.
