Wood was forced to field his team and play the game, or forfeit. Wood 
would never go down without a fight, so he played the team he had.

I had wondered about why the game was played with a player short as 
well. Am grateful to have that bit of strategy explained. Is this a 
case of something a British reader would have totally understood and 
that a dopey American used to 2nd, 3rd and sometimes 4th string 
players wouldn't have caught on to? Can any of our esteemed British 
colleagues comment?
