I'm not going to get too much farther into the "what real mothers
would have done" theory because I just don't feel strongly enough
about the possibility that V-Mort was trying to spare Lily.
All I'm saying is that V-Mort, if he intended to spare Lily, whether
for Snape, or for his own lusts (Ew!) or because she's his
granddaughter (Ew again!), he didn't seem to try very hard.
Now, onto Lynn's theories:

Very plausible. I tend to think, regardless, the V-Mort would have
killed James and Lily anyway. It's just good business to not leave
behind any vengeful folks.

And a Muggle-born female at that. So long as V-Mort's in the
neighborhood, why not off another Mudblood? I could see that.
