I have a certain problem with Snape having peformed vital public
actions to prove himself, like defending the potters at Godric's
Hollow. Wouldn't that betray him to Voldemort as a spy and traitor
as well? No matter how much he wanted to save James and Lily, it
would have been foolish to betray himself and lose any chance of
future information gathering. No, my money is on Lupin, if there was
a fifth person there at all. Not that Snape couldn't still have been
the hero; his cover would be completely safe if he had alerted
Dumbledore, who sent Lupin, or told Lupin himself what was going on.
Snape is one of my favorite characters, which is why I think he is
too cunnning to actually show up at Godric's Hollow that infamous
night.
