How could the switch keep Lupin from being captured and 
tortured?  Voldemort doesn't know about it!  Anyway, Voldemort 
doesn't have to directly attack the Secret Keeper. He could 
murder a child a week until the Potters were given up to him.  It 
may be that the use of the Secret Keeper spell, and the intention 
to make Sirius  the Secret Keeper, were deliberately leaked in 
order to forestall just that.  Voldemort would then know that, 
regardless of who he pounded on, only the Secret Keeper could 
deliver the Potters and only by *choosing to reveal* the secret. It's 
clear that Sirius believes that killing Peter or putting him under 
mind control of some kind wouldn't have gotten Voldemort what 
he wanted.

Lupin *could* have used that argument himself, but he doesn't. 
""Not if he thought I was the spy. I assume that's why you didn't 
tell me?" he said casually..." If there's one thing we know about 
Lupin, it's that he's casual about important stuff. He  really wants 
to find out if he was suspected. Maybe he's just looking for an 
opportunity to confess that he himself suspected Sirius. Or not.
