You're right in saying he has come clean so far - though of course
most of the goodies have, excepting Cedric and sort-of Sirius.
The example that springs to mind about sacrifice is Harry's deciding
to go for the stone. He's sacrificing everything and he knows it. All
right, it all turns out well in the end. But otherwise we'd have a
dead main character. The experience in itself, I think, leaves
toothmarks on his psyche, making sure that even though Dumbledore
turns up at exactly the right moment (or not too late anyway), the
sacrifice doesn't come to nothing.
