"Baron" is indeed an English title. The "Red Baron", at least the real one,
Manfred von Richtoffen, was a "Freiherr" a fairly low rank of German nobility.
The English press dubbed him a "Baron", using an equivalent British title.
The "Red" came from his plane, which was painted blood red. He was also
sometimes referred to as the "Bloody Baron".
