I was of the opinion that a professor was expected to have some working knowledge of the Dark Arts before teaching DADA, but, for some reason, faculty at Hogwarts has been a bit lax in its hiring for this position. Also, with Trelawney, who doesn't seem to have much exceptional ability in fortune telling except when she doesn't even realize she's doing it.

But my real question is -- *why* doesn't Snape get that job? Is it because he's so good at his current position that nobody could replace him? Does Dumbledore just not take DADA as seriously as the other classes? I can see the rumor idea -- that's definitely a possibility. But rumors come from somewhere. Why would the kids get the idea that Snape wants to teach DADA?
