 According to JKR, James inherited "plenty of money" and therefore 
did not need to rely on his choice of profession to support him. (AOL

As far as how Sirius got the money out of the vault, I always thought 
it must have been some kind of automatic withdrawel sytem, working 
along the same lines as writing a check. However don't ask me details 
as I haven't developed the thoght that far. Regarding the actual 
purchase being made I belief that he told Harry that Crookshanks took 
the older to the owl post for him. I'm at work and don't have my 
books and I don't remember the exact quote.
