I'd say Hermione is safe because JK has said that Hermione is pretty 
much *her*. What author is going to want to kill *herself* off while 
she's having so much fun?

I don't know about that... it is actually pretty common for author
avatars to die tragic deaths. It happens all of the time in Mary Sue
fanfic.  JKR has raised the issue of no one worrying about Hermione and
how vulnerable she is a couple of times. No one is really safe.

 

Helen, who loves Hermione and will cry buckets if anything happens to
her
