Just MNSHO, but I don't agree with you that it's selfish. Now, as I said
in my response earlier to this question, I do hope that Percy is paying
room and board since he's staying at home. That would be the responsible,
adult thing to do. But even though his family is poor, they are not
*destitute*. They have enough money to get by, and there is no reason in
the world that Percy should have to contribute to the family finances in
order to bump them up to a better status. He should be using his money
for the things that he needs, saving it to get enough to move out on his
own, etc.
When I left college and started working, I was still living at home and
my mom was single. She ended up being self-employed and making very
little money and all of a sudden I was the bread winner in the family. I
deeply resented it because there was no good reason for me to be the main
earner, she was able-bodied. It would be very unfair to Percy to expect
him to shoulder any part of the family's financial responsibilities
unless Arthur were to be hurt or lose his job for some reason.
Sorry - that's a bit of a nerve with me! ;-)
