  Well, In fact Jk said in one of the (i think) scholastic chat sessions, i'll look it up for you, that James came from a wealthy family so he didn't need to work to make his living or he didn't need a well paid job. Something like that. So we do know that James Potter came from a rich family. Maybe Sirius too. Or maybe he just got a winning ticket for the Wizarding Lotery, who knows.
