Or, what if LV asked her to step aside because he realized her protection of the baby was dangerous to him? Of course, in GoF, he admits that that hadn't occured to him at the time... Yes, I think I like the idea that he has Mom issues and he, despite being evil, didn't want to murder a mother who was trying to save her baby.
