I think that it was a combination of being appointed at the last minute, the
transformation and not being able to afford somethings, is what put Lupin onto
the train on Sept. 1. As you said, we don't know for sure because canon
doesn't tell us. By the way, I looked up when the full moon was that year and it
was at around 2 AM that date.
