Also keep in mind that the OOP was reformed two books later, and
wouldn't 
have been meeting at the time. OTOH, Dumbledore definately knew (as
the 
ministry asked his permission to station the Dementors around the
school 
grounds), and I'm sure he would have owled Lupin...
