Now me : Sirius probably hated his family even before attending 
Hogwarts. 
Remember that he was not his mother's favourite son. And he could 
also disagree with their opinions concerning Dark Magic.
Couldn't we then imagine that he asked the Sorting Hat to put him in 
Gryffindor? If all the Balcks used to go to Slytherin, it was a nice 
way to bother them or to show them he disagreed with their ideas.
It was an act of rebellion, and a matter of choice. On that last 
point, if that theory was true, it would be an interesting parallel 
with Harry.
