It was also confirmed in an interview by JKR, I think. She said that
Harry's parents were in Gryffindor. Besides, if the Marauders had
worn the school uniforms during her O.W.L. tests, Harry would have
seen James' shawl. So it was probably more than assumption.

That's right. But Sirius said "The" badge not "A" badge. Which highly
indicates IMO, that he meant that there was only one badge for James,
Sirius or Remus. Which means that they had to be in the same house.
