Voldemort calls people mudbloods all the time and he is not a pureblood. 
  Just because Snape called Lily one doesn't mean he might not be one 
himself.  There are hints to indicate he was not from a happy home and 
for some reason, I have doubts that an abusive father would last long in 
the WW as wizards seem a vindictive lot and either his mother would have 
cursed his father in time, if she were a Witch..or her relatives might. 
   He might be a half blood, his abusive father needing a woman he could 
easily dominate and who might have been a muggle.

Time will tell, I guess
