Even if she had absolutely nothing to do during the
day (which I do not believe) it doesn't means she
*has* to work. The family does has enough money, they
do get by. The kids don't have everything they'd
like, but they have everything they need.
Maybe she just prefers not to work. Maybe no one
would hire her or all she could get is minimum wage.
Note: what about tending the chickens, making
sweaters, keeping the house clean, etc? And who says
she has to be busy every minute of the day?
