If Charlie and Bill weren't old enough to remember it, then Ron definitely 
wasn't.

And don't you have to actually *witness* a death?  That was why, in my 
opinion, Harry couldn't see the thestrals until he saw Cedric die. He was 
present at his mother's death but did not actually see it (even if he were 
capable of understanding it at the age of eighteen months).  If not for the 
dementors, he would probably not remember anything except the green light of 
Voldemort's failed curse.
