On the same vein, it's interesting to note that when Harry first 
picks up his future wand in Olivander's (PS, p 65 UK ed), the sparks 
that shoot out of it are described as being red and gold.  Gryffindor 
colours to be sure...there seems to be a lot of repetition in the 
colours emitting from wizards' wands.  Coincidence???  Maybe...but 
then again, not much in Rowling's writing ever turns out to be 
coincidence...
