I considered  that to be the case myself - just for a couple of minutes.
Then I  asked myself - would Voldy use the Stone while still attached
to Quirrell - and give Quirrell eternal life too? Answer - no. He'd make
sure the Stone was safe and then - alternative arrangements with dear
Quirrell  surplus to  requirements. How I  don't know, but I'll bet he'd
already made plans.
