How did Giants come in contact with the Muggles?

Looking at the Lexicon the following passage caught my attention: 

"The Giants allied themselves with Voldemort in the 1970s and were
responsible for many of the worst incidents of killing and torturing,
especially of Muggles."

How is it that the Giants came in contact with the Muggles? One would
think that Giants going into Muggle community would be impossible to
cover up, even with a whole army of wizards screaming Obliviate so I
assume that isn't what happened. Also I doubt that the Death Eaters
would waste their time bringing Muggles to the Giants when they could
just kill them themselves. And finally, would the Giants just
attacking Muggles who happened to come into their area, be that much
concern to most wizards? Just wondering.
