Yes, I agree with both of these points.  Neville's talent in Herbology HAS to be significant because he's such a failure at everything else.   And of course a decent fellow like Neville wouldn't stoop to the level of the DE's.  But really, somebody's got to put an end to the evil.  I've always had an image of Neville cooking up something and maybe with a little help in trickery  from Hermione putting the DE's out of commission once and for all!
