To me it's mostly the possibility to escape to a magical dreamworld.  
I often compare the stories to the early short stories by Stephen 
King.  He used to say at the beginning of the books (and now I'm 
including a free translation from Dutch): "Take my hand and join me 
on this adventure."

That's what JKR does to me with the HP books.  She takes my hand for 
an adventure.  And I'm enjoying every step of it.
