Another point that no one has mentioned (to my knowledge) is that the
chart traces the paternal (Black) side of the family, not the maternal
side (even though Sirius's mother is the one who was most obsessed
with genealogy). The Snape connection (which I think must exist given
the intermarriages of purebloods) could be on her side. Sirius's
mother and Severus's father would make a formidable pair of cousins.

BTW, Snape Sr. was a Dark wizard if there ever was one, but he doesn't
seem to have been a Death Eater. Any speculations about what happened
to him?
