I was more referring to his "don't mess with me" manner.  As you said, the DEs don't put alot of value on human life and such.  To survive in something like that, a person has to become tougher.  Snape needed to learn how to be more confident in himself because if he didn't, he could be seen as weak.  And Voldemort doesn't strike me as the type who would keep weak people around (Pettigrew has extenuating circumstances...).  OTOH, Snape confidence could've come from leaving the DEs.  Being able to get out of that group before it was too late.  If that is the case, then he *still* owes who he is to the DEs - just in a more roundabout way.
