Geoff:
I'm not sure that it is necessary for folk to know that LV was TR. 
Dumbledore comments that Tom dropped out of sight for years before 
resurfacing as Voldemort. The few folk who knew might have been his 
old cronies from Hogwarts but, in a sense "Voldemort was Tom Riddle - 
so?" would probably be the reaction of many folk.

Geoff:
It might have been an attempt to re-establish some sort of empathy, 
or an appeal to his pre-Voldemort self. It might also have been to 
divert LV's attention away from Harry after the failed AK attempt.
