I have been keeping a list of the books mentioned in the series, and 
there is no doubt that the WW are fascinated by the history of magic, 
and make a lot of effort not to lose track of old spells. Just look 
down the list of titles JKR mentions to get a feel for the importance 
she places on book-learning (the inner Hermione in her coming out ?!)
